Your dashboard indicators can light up for several reasons, and understanding what each of those little symbols mean can sometimes be a bit confusing. This guide is going to help you know what you need to do to keep your Chevy running in good fashion.
Lights About Your Car’s Lights
Fog Lamps: This symbol, with its three horizontal lines and a wavy vertical line going through it has the rounded dome shape indicating that it is a light. The fog lamp is important when you are in foggy conditions because it allows visibility to be much higher
Exterior Lamps: This is a circular light facing down, with lines around it to show that the light is on. It is nice to know this one, especially around dusk. Having your vehicle’s lights on is important and it is sometimes difficult to tell just as the sun is going down. This one will let you know whether or not you’re good to go.
Headlamp High/Low-Beam Changer: This is the same rounded dome as the fog lamps, but with five horizontal lines next to it. Paying attention to your high/low-beam is important. These are also known as your “brights”. On empty highways late at night, these are great for making sure you see far enough into the distance to stay safe from wildlife, etc. They can also be flashed to indicate signals to other drivers, such as slowing down because there is an accident ahead. It is best to turn them off on a two lane road when you have approaching traffic because looking into them in blinding.
Common Dashboard Indicators
Fuel Gauge: This is an easy one. It looks like a fuel station, viewed from the side. If this one is on, know that you need to get to a gas station quickly. You are running very low on gasoline or diesel.
Windshield Washer Fluid: This light will be a giveaway because the dashed lines are used for water. When this light is on, you need to refill your washer fluid. It is important to have this topped off for when something dirty gets on your windshield while driving.
Safety Belt Reminders: This light is easy to spot because it is a human with their seat belt on. This light is only turned on though, when someone is not wearing their seatbelt. It is of utmost concern to have your seatbelt on when the car is in motion, so if you see this light, make sure that you get seatbelts on all of the passengers.
Anti-Lock Brake System: This light is a giveaway with its ABS written in all capital letters. It is telling you that there is a problem with your anti-lock brake system. This is what helps the effectiveness of your car when you slam on the brakes. Definitely make sure to that this in to a mechanic or address it yourself when this light comes on.
Cruise Control: You will see a speedometer with an arrow pointing to a certain point. This lets you know that your cruise control is engaged. There are no problems with your cruise control system when this light is on. It is only telling you that you are using the system. This is good news because it means you are most likely on a long stretch of highway and finding the roads clear enough to use this convenient system.
